What is auto insurance uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage? And why is it important?
In my last post, we covered the basics of auto insurance liability coverage. In this post, we’ll move on to Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage provide protection for your bodily injury and your property damage in the event that the at fault party doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.
So, let’s say you’re in an accident driving your 2020 Tahoe that is worth $40-55k, and another driver hits you. Your airbags deploy and your vehicle is totalled. Turns out the other driver only has state minimum limits so their policy is only going to pay $25k for your car. Thankfully, if you have Underinsured Motorist Coverage, that coverage will kick in to cover the difference. The same concept applies when the other driver is uninsured or when it is a hit and run. In that case, the Uninsured Motorist Coverage would apply and cover your damage.
While we always recommend higher liability limits, the fact of the matter is that many people in SC drive with state minimum limits or with no insurance at all. The Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage is there to protect you.
